If you are a first-time contract-holder (tenant) with the council, you will be given a 12-month introductory contract (tenancy agreement). Your contract (tenancy) will become a secure contract (tenancy) after the 12-month period unless there are any contract breaches.

Introductory contracts (introductory tenant agreement) allow us, as a community landlord, to take action quickly to end the contract (tenancy) of those who are causing difficulties. This is for the benefit of neighbourhoods and communities.

Our responsibility as a landlord

As your landlord, it is our responsibility to provide you with accommodation which is well-managed and in good condition.

We have dedicated Tenancy Officers, Finance Officers and Anti-social Behaviour Officers who can help if you are having difficulties paying your rent or having difficulties with neighbours.

Your responsibility as a contract-holder (tenant)

As a contract-holder (tenant), you should respect your neighbours, your community and the council officers who provide services. You also have a shared responsibility to look after the property and any gardens or outbuildings you might have.

If you are having difficulty coping with looking after the property, we will help you in every way we can.

We will not tolerate contract-holders (tenants) who damage their homes or communities, or who cause a nuisance or abuse to their neighbours. It is in everyone’s interest that we take a strong line against such behaviour. We will try to sort out any problems, but we will take action to evict those who abuse their property, their neighbours or council staff.
